Net zero project: Sweden's first residential microgrid in older buildings

SBF Fonder transformed Safiren, a five-building residential complex in Kalmar, Sweden, into the country's first microgrid for older residential buildings. By installing 727 rooftop solar panels, heat pumps, thermal energy storage and smart control systems, the project enables locally produced solar power to be shared across the property and used where demand is highest. Beyond the asset itself, the project influenced Swedish legislation, raising permitted installed capacity and enabling microgrids between older buildings nationwide, establishing Safiren as a replicable model for the energy transition in older housing stock.
